Maud
was fifteen when her first work was published. It was a poem called "On Cape
LeForce." A newspaper in PEI printed it on the front
page. Maud wrote in her journal, "Well, this has been the proudest day of my
life!"
That proud day came near the end of a difficult year. Maud had
gone to stay with her father. He lived in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, with his
new wife, Mary Ann McRae. Maud loved her father, but her stepmother was not kind
to her. She was happy to return to Prince Edward
Island.
